Be Safe….

January 10, 2007

A series of avalanches after the heavy snowfalls of last week has claimed the lives of at least 8 people across The Alps. There have been a few slides here in Verbier but fortunately no-one has been hurt. Mountain Guides are warning all skiers and boarders to be extra vigilant and fear that many people are taking unecessary risks. One of our instructors here at European Snowsport, James Cove has, written the story for the BBC web site.

And another for the SCGB on a lighter note….

Weather warms up in Verbier

January 10, 2007

Waking up to the sound of hard rain yesterday we hoped for snow higher up on the mountain. However rain went up as far as Attelas. The weather had turned warmer and the promised snowstorm had changed to something rather damper!

The Army boys are in town showing off their racing skills but apart from this the slopes are still really quiet. Today first thing the pistes were rather bobbly with chunks of frozen rain much in evidence. However, by 11am we were enjoying softer conditions and even some spring snow over the front side of Savoleyres.

On slope restaurants are also quiet at the moment and worth a visit for a late lunch. On the main mountain it is possible to ski (with care) down to Chez Dany - just follow the signs

Chez Dany

On the front side of Savoleyres the Marmottes restaurant was almost empty at 12pm although soon filled up and the food was as good as usual – try the rosti but don’t plan any mogul skiing afterwards!! As you can see from the picture the desserts are worth trying as well – although Roddy of European Snowsport went a bit far trying three of the great selection.
